Crop factor without myths

Crop factor describes sensor size relative to full frame. Multiplying focal length helps compare field of view.

Core principle

Crop factor describes sensor size relative to full frame. Multiplying focal length helps compare field of view.

Practical workflow

Physical focal length and aperture do not change. For matching framing, depth of field can also be compared.

  1. Define the image goal and working conditions.
  2. Choose baseline settings and make a test frame.
  3. Check focus, histogram and critical image areas.
  4. Record the settings that worked and why you changed them.

What to verify before finishing

Exposure at the same f-number, shutter and ISO is unchanged, although noise and total captured light depend on more factors.

Do not treat a single rule as a guarantee. Conditions, equipment design and output size change the requirements. Record settings and conclusions in the AparatTo planner.

Next step
